I'm not trying to offend you, I'm sorry. I guess it's just me but I don't care for race, people are people

You don’t get to say that. You don’t get to say “people are people” when Black people are intentionally being killed for being Black— people clearly aren’t people. People aren’t “people” when a white felon can more easily get a job than a Black person who has never committed a crime. You don’t get to pretend you live in an alternate reality in which the construct of race doesn’t exist because it does. It doesn’t help anyone for you to pretend that race doesn’t exist and “people are just people”. Psychologists link that thinking to people being racists because it shows that you’d rather ignore reality than realize that people are oppressed for their races and it shows you don’t know how to empathize.

Why is it that removing race makes white people feel so comfortable.

You should be insulted that your racism is so deep you need to remove a person’s heritage to see them as a person. You need to change the context of events just to understand them. How do you have the nerve to call yourself enlightened when in order to see the picture you have to blur the whole image.

Get out of here lol!

I used to think color blindness was a good goal too.

What convinced me was something apparently quite shallow - the consistent attacking of natural black hair. The army insisting black women have only expensive hairstyles that require routine salon visits is bad enough - but it also happens in schools. It happens in grade schools.

The argument used is “the rules are the same for everyone.”

THAT is applying “color blindness” and it shows very clearly that what many people mean by it is pulling everyone towards whiteness.

And being color blind is also to deny the amazing contributions African-American people have made to American culture, ones that are often co-opted by whites without thought (or sometimes knowledge) of their origins.

For example, very few people know…I know I didn’t until recently…that the southern staple vegetable okra is not an American plant. It’s an African plant. It was brought over by slaves and planted in their own gardens, then white people tried it and liked it.

Obviously, acknowledging differences isn’t an excuse to treat people unfairly, but how about appreciating them once in a while? How about acknowledging the value and beauty of other people’s cultures and heritage?

Oh, and I just love how “color blind casting” always means casting a white person to play a non-white character. Or at least, that’s always when the term is trotted out.

Value, appreciate, try your best to understand and heck, yeah, try to treat people fairly. But don’t erase - and really this is another term for erasure.
